July 2014. Parents to be Irka and Tolik live in the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine, near the Russian border; a disputed territory ever since the Donbas war began. The nervous anticipation for their firstborn is violently interrupted by the fall of flight MH17, which escalates the tensions that are already simmering throughout the town. The wreckage of the downed airplane and an incoming crowd of mourners only emphasize the surreal trauma of the moment.
Meanwhile, Tolik’s separatist friends expect him to join the cause, and Irka’s brother becomes furious as he suspects that the couple have betrayed Ukraine. Irka refuses evacuation even when her town is captured by Armed Forces, and she tries to make peace between her husband and brother asking them to work together in repairing their bombed home.
